Beautiful chaos: Hill End drawings and inscriptions
Bathurst Regional Art Gallery
Beautiful chaos looks at Hill End through two lenses. Firstly, in drawings and paintings, it examines the physical structures in the landscape, which in all weathers and seasons change the expression of place, and change over time as the village is valued and used in different ways.
The second lens is that of language, language used about Hill End and about the traditions and lineages of artists who found the village and its people, drew close, looked and looked, and adapted what they found for their work.
The words are carved in slate and sandstone. The diaries of Donald Friend, his jaunty Hillendiana, and the learned, grave and amusing conversation of contemporaries are sources for inscriptions.
The work began with my residency at Murray's Cottage in February 2004. The time elapsed, and many return visits have deepened my affection for Hill End, and allowed what I think is a more measured and analytical survey in this exhibition than would have been possible on first acquaintance. [S]
